"A primal scream in defense of white working-class wage serfs....viciously funny...a politically unclassifiable polemic sure to humor, or offend, or enrage...in equal measure". -- BooklistRednecks...hillbillies...crackers...trailer trash. Whatever they're called, America's poor whites have become easy targets for ridicule and hostility in this country.A much needed reassessment of the classic caricature, The Redneck Manifesto traces the history of the white underclass and exposes the real sources of its frustrations, anger, and follies. From a provocative reevaluation of "hatemongers, gun nuts, and paranoid, tax-resisting extremists" to an explanation of why Elvis, Bigfoot, and space aliens are objects of veneration, Goad elucidates redneck politics, religion, and values in his own uniquely unusual way."A furious, profane, smart, and hilariously smart-aleck defense of working-class white culture....Something important, necessary, and long overdue has been said". -- Rod Dreher, Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

From Booklist
Angry white male or astute social critic? Whichever, Goad (he's not using a pseudonym, is he?) bellows a primal scream in defense of white working-class wage serfs. There is not a meek, mealy-mouthed word in this tract, so readers had better strap themselves in if they recoil from cussing, epithets for every blankety-blank group under the sun, or chapter titles such as "Several Compelling Arguments for the Enslavement of All White Liberals." This tract is so hyperbolic, so vitriolic, so viciously funny, so unrestrained, that its sheer outlandishness might indicate that Goad is just venting a sustained satire. But his harangue is in earnest, a high-decibel diatribe agin' big gummint, high taxes, big business, and the media reiteration of (white) racism as the metaexplainer of what's wrong with America. Moreover, Goad's book will not go quietly, as it is a politically unclassifiable polemic sure to humor, or offend, or enrage library patrons, in equal measure. Gilbert Taylor

From Kirkus Reviews
An often reactionary diatribe on reverse discrimination by the editor of the 'zine Answer Me!, redeemed in large part by its author's phenomenal sense of humor. Goad disavows both the political right and left, but he's most likely to be tagged as a conservative. He's most lucid when characterizing the centuries-old race struggle in our country as a smokescreen for what should really be a class struggle. The poor have been enslaved, persecuted, and exploited by the upper class regardless of skin color, Goad maintains. That words like ``redneck'' and ``white trash'' are deemed acceptable while the ``N-word'' is not is proof that as Americans, by and large, we have been duped by rich folks into playing the race card. The author is at his best when using humor to elucidate a point, as when he argues that both black slaves and some disenfranchised whites were cheated and lied to by society in the same manner. Ex-slaves were offered 40 acres and a mule (which they never saw); whites in 18th- century America who had been bonded servants (in effect, white slaves) were promised ``two suits, an ax, and two hoes.'' The hoes, ``we are to presume, were gardening tools instead of prostitutes, unless `weeding' and `grubbing' were sexual euphemisms in colonial America.'' Goad's astute command of history and his sharp wit make for a volatile combination, and one that could be misread. A truly bigoted reader may take Goad's remarks about Lincoln not really intending to free the slaves, or about there being other Holocausts besides the Jewish one, out of context and use them to buttress their racism or anti-Semitism--views that Goad clearly does not sympathize with. But, of course, ideas that have value are also often dangerous. While Goad's defense (and overview) of redneck culture past and present is sure to infuriate the liberal reader, he is also likely to make that same reader laugh ruefully, and often. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review
Rod Dreher Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel A furious, profane, smart and hilariously smart-aleck defense of working-class white culture.

Crib Magazine In another life, this book was a U-Haul packed to the gills with manure and TNT, left idling near a major government building, or a Smokecraft beef jerky-sponsored monster truck revved and ready to roll over the stuccoed suburban palace where Jeff Foxworthy sleeps.

PDXS A funny, engagingly written polemic....Goad should be congratulated and thanked for cutting through the numerous taboos that prevent an honest discussion of race in this country.

Ethan G. Machado Our Town Dares to rewrite American history, take on government greed and lambaste white liberals....Goad's eight-cylinder prose intentionally rattles the reader, driving home a message that challenges the conventional wisdom of many a Honda Accord owner.

Its about time someone told the truth about whites being treated like crap by others there is no shortage of white suffering either i think this book doesavery good job of separating the old boys and the good ol boys 2 totally separate groups of whites. 1 group is the elitists whites that spread the contempt toward regular working whites who suffer, are poor, needy, and struggle just like all the other races on their city blocks. but the same elitist whites are the same whites who bought and sold other whites exactly the same as they did to the blacks ...the poor working white guy lives on the same block and has the same struggles as the poor working black guy this book does a great job of separating not black from white but regular folks from those that detest them and those are the rich liberal elitist whites who see poor whites the same way they see poor blacks except in thier self righteousness they aim to put poor whites who struggle in the cross hairs of the hatred of non whites when in actuality it should be the poor whites and regular working whites ,blacks,Hispanics that should be standing together to take down the rich elitist whites. This book opened my eyes and it did a great job of really explaining the misdirection and deflection of elitists to blame and hate poor or regular working white folks. pretty sad actually but a great book and a great read. it really shows there is no need for white guilt or privilage and that it is all foisted upon whites by white elitist cultural marxists. and it really needs to stop.

An Important Book with Flaws
By Daniel
Finally, someone who zooms out on the racial topic and sees all sides for what they are. He doesn't deny the black struggle at all, but simply doesn't deny or minimize the white one. He also finally de-lumps the white community into a community as different in influences as all minority communities are (instead of being generalized into one rich, educated dude), which helps us pinpoint where problems really stem from and might even help race activists find their allies more easily and in greater numbers. Reveals the inconsistencies of the liberal platform (and was a liberal once himself, so no biased conservativism or closeted racism here here). Goad's words bring us closer to peace because they give credit where credit is due to all and don't simplify things, the way we've been taught to do for years in school. Also, he puts economics at the center of things, which people keep forgetting has always been the driving force behind everything.
Four stars because Goad's acerbic language and his huuuuge unrelated/unfocused tangent in the middle chapters probably shakes off a lot of open-minded people who might otherwise be brought to seriously consider this point of view. Also, because Goad is a fake hick and not Southern but kind of pretends to be one. Also, because the different branches of poor whitedom aren't fully differentiated and the focus is either more general urban poor whites or more on poor rural 'hicks'. More research needs to be done on the difference between those experiences and on poor white immigrants as well.
But thanks for writing this book, Goad.

Please read with an open mind and expect a lot of obscene language that is meant to shock and desensitize.

Must-read
By Matt W.
Reading this book gave me a strange new respect for Jim Goad.

The Redneck Manifesto is yet another required book, because it's a funny work that pioneered many of the ideas modern Americans take for granted. As a defense of "white trash," the most maligned social group in America, it's not merely an attack on anti-white liberals, it's a scholarly work debunking many of the myths surrounding race and class in America. And Goad wrote it all the way back in 1997.

It's a fair point: why are rednecks, hillbillies and poor whites America's collective whipping boy? The left says it's because whites have been somehow oppressing minorities for centuries, yet rednecks and white trash are just as poor as the blacks they've supposedly been oppressing. The same dweebs squirting tears over Trayvon Martin and trying to convince us that no, Rachel Jeantel isn't illiterate love to crack jokes about the "stupidity" and "inbred" nature of those white bumpkins out in the sticks. Goad collectively backhands them for their hypocrisy.

If you know Goad from his other writings, you know exactly what to expect from The Redneck Manifesto; lots of vulgarity, violence and black humor, leavened in this particular instance with scholarly chops. It makes reading the book an absolute breeze--I plowed through it in a day-and-a-half--but some of his more graphic sexual references may put off readers who are more interested in the factual veracity of his arguments.

To be sure, Goad unloads both barrels at the myth of "white privilege." Through historical research, he shows that discrimination against poor whites has always been a reality of American culture, and actually predates the settling of this country in the form of the feudalism of the medieval era and the Roman Empire. Goad reveals that contra the myth that blacks and white liberals tell themselves, as many as half to two-thirds of whites who came to the New World did so against their will, either as prisoners (England shipped their convicts to America before the Revolution forced them to use Australia for that purpose instead), indentured servants or actual slaves.

The Redneck Manifesto also corroborates Mark Ames' claims in Going Postal that black slaves were treated considerably better than white indentured servants. Goad even does the unthinkable in this Puritan Anglophilic country; he brings up the plunder of Ireland by Oliver Cromwell's Puritans following the English Civil War. Usually glossed over in history books (along with all the other tortures that the English inflicted on the Irish), Goad notes how Cromwell and his cronies transformed the Emerald Isle into the world's largest open-air rape camp, selling countless Catholic Irish into slavery in the Americas, where they were worked so hard that close to eighty percent of them died within the first year of their servitude.

Goad also points out that bashing "white trash" has a long pedigree in American culture, going back to just before the Civil War, when slave-owning Southerners encouraged their black slaves to look down on poor, non-slave-owning whites as a means of social control. He also brings up how even during the "golden age" of Ellis Island, immigrants were brought to the U.S. mainly as a way to keep wages down and enrich the capitalist class. Despite his extreme language and willingness to use racial slurs with abandon, Goad's message is aggressively moderate and almost Marxist, as he argues that wealthy whites foment racial hatred as a means to keep poor whites and blacks--who have more in common than they think--at each others' throats. This kumbaya-saying gets a little sickening near the end as Goad calls for racial reconciliation in the same way that clueless conservatives whining about "reverse racism" do.

The other major issue with The Redneck Manifesto--or at least it might be an issue for some people--is that the book's focus changes somewhat abruptly a third of the way through. After Goad is finished explaining America's history of discrimination against poor whites, he moves into a series of loosely connected observations on white trash life, centered on the St. Johns neighborhood in Portland where he was living at the time. Additionally, the final third of the book is devoted to Goad's political rants. These segments are no less entertaining than the rest of the book, but some people may find the shift to be annoying.

Additionally, I was touched by The Redneck Manifesto because I'm barely a generation removed from the "white trash" that Goad describes. While I'm as middle-class as they come, my dad's family are authentic Catholic rednecks; doubly cursed, doubly discriminated against, doubly impoverished. Without getting into the details, I know for a fact that the "white privilege" that urban upper-middle white liberals pontificate about is a lie. They're a class of Harper Lees, desperately trying to scapegoat poor whites for the racial hatred that they fostered and they alone benefited from.

The Redneck Manifesto is worth reading alone for Goad's hilarious prose, but it's also an important sociological work. It's a broadside against several decades of leftist lies drilled into our skulls. If you want to understand America better, you need to read The Redneck Manifesto.
