Aeroelasticity in a unique and simple way

You will not find a book in Aeroelasticity that deals with it like this one.
Most books that are old present material that is hard to find in other books.
It is good in presenting this subject in rather a simple way, and includes the derivation of most of the equations needed.
The order of the topics in chapters is good as starts from the first thing to know in Aeroelasticity and finishes with more advanced topics.
Disadvantages are that this book goes straight into topic without proper introduction! I mean you need to have a strong background on Aerodynamics and Strength of Materials. Even the few pages in the beginning are not enough in my opinion.
When comparing this one to the other famous reference "Aeroelasticity' by Bisplinghoff, all opinions agree that the latter is better.For me I can't say anything different.

Excellent -- depending on what you are looking for

Fung's book on aeroelasticity is probably the second classic reference on this topic after Bisplinghoff's work. Although quite old, the book still retains its relevance since the field has not changed dramatically since he wrote this over 40 years ago. Yes, you will not see references to FEA/FEM, programming notes, etc. but the essential theory is very clearly laid out by the author. This is something that is usually lacking in recent texts.

Since aeroelasticity is by its very nature, quite interdisciplinary, any book claiming to deal with the topic will eventually suffer from lack of depth. This is quite obvious from Fung's book but that is not to detract from its value as a very clear and concise exposition of the principles of aeroelasticity.

I highly recommend this book for someone who has a good grasp of undergraduate engineering and would like to explore the fundamentals of aeroelasticity. Other than that, Bisplinghoff's book is a standard reference for this topic. A newer text by Wright & Cooper is more relevant if one is looking for implementation. Lastly, a multiauthor work "A modern course in aeroelasticity" is available that aims towards a more mature audience (graduate students & researchers) by trying to maintain sufficient depth throughout.

David Zientara

David Zientara is a software engineer and IT professional living in northern New Jersey. He has 20 years of experience in IT and has been an enthusiastic supporter of the free and open source software (FOSS) community throughout his career, beginning with his first foray into the open source world with Slackware Linux in 1995. In the mid-1990s, David became lead software engineer for Oxberry LLC, a digital imaging company headquartered in New Jersey. In this capacity, he played a major role in developing a new software package for the company's film scanners for Windows while also helping maintain Oxberry's legacy software, which had been developed for the SGI IRIX platform. He continued in this role for many years and continues to play a part in software development for Oxberry's corporate successor. In the mid-2000s, David took an interest in computer networking, an interest that led him to learn about m0n0wall and, eventually, pfSense, a fork of the m0n0wall project. Great book! I took my TEAS today and got ...

Great book! I took my TEAS today and got a 85.3%. I used this book, studied it for a couple months, and did all 3 of the practice tests. I just completed my associates degree in Biology with Health Care and I feel like I already knew a lot of the stuff I was being tested on because I learned it for my degree. But if you are a non traditional student, or any student for that matter, I would definitely recommend this book.
Side note, I feel like the science questions in the practice tests were easier than the one in the real test I took today! I got a 70% on the science section for my real test, which is MUCH lower than what I got in all the practice tests. But at the same time, I felt that the math section was easier in the real test than it was in the practice tests (96.4% on real test for math). I guess it just depends on the kind of person you are and how well you do for each subject! Overall I thought the test was pretty easy.
The book comes with a large study portion of all 4 subjects. Whenever I got stuck on a question in the practice tests I would refer to that section in the book and if I still didn't understand I would check the answer in the back of the book.

Choose this book for your ATI TEAS

I bought this book under my mother's amazon account so I'm posting this as a 22 year old who had to take the ATI TEAS test for entrance into nursing programs. Overall, I think this book worked well. The reading, math and English language sections prepared me very well for the test. Compared to the test, the book's science section was good. I felt like I got some questions on the test that the science section touched on but didn't delve very deep into (mostly concerning with the endocrine system), but a majority of the science questions could be answered by reading and studying the book. I love that the book gave 3 practice tests. I tested myself before I started studying and after reading the book. The question wording and question types in this book were very similar to the actual test so I thought that was a plus. Also the actual test might've been easier than the practice tests. On all three practice tests from the book I got from 80%-85%, but on the actual test I scored a 91%. I don't know how much of my past education played a role in my ability to do well on the test. I recently graduated from college with a health related degree, but I do think that without this study guide I wouldn't have done as well, it helped me brush up on topics I had forgotten as well as teach me things I never knew (mostly relating to English grammar section). I probably studied over a period of 2 weeks on and off, but if you haven't been to school or taken class in a while (especially if science isn't your strong suit) I definitely recommend using this book and studying way ahead of time. Compared to the price of other books, this one is a bargain for how well it prepares you.

I wrote this long review because when I was looking for a book to study with there weren't many detailed reviews or many books to choose from because this version of the test is so new (they started giving it this year in August). I wanted to be helpful for the next person like myself. Hope this helps!

and I already like it so much

I just started reading the book, and I already like it so much. It is very organized, well written, and it explains the topics in detail which is really helpful. I was nervous for the upcoming TEAS, but this book made me feel confident. In addition, I really like the practice tests included because it gives me an overview as to how the TEAS is going to be like, and the explanations to the right answers are my favorite part. I am really happy I found this book.

She flees China with her stepbrother, Alexei, to search for her father, leaving behind her lover, Chang An Lo, a Communist rebel. When Alexei later abandons Lydia, Lo comes to the rescue, but not before Lydia learns the terrible truth about the only family she has left. Furnivall deftly evokes the details of a bygone era, though these often take too much of a front seat and distract from Lydia's quest to find her father. Fans of Furnivall's earlier works will enjoy the chance to see what has become of Lydia. (June)

Kate Furnivall was born in Wales and currently lives in Devon, England. Married and the mother of two sons, she has working in publishing and television advertising. She drew inspiration for The Russian Concubine from her mother’s experiences as a White Russian refugee in China.

Surprisingly good

The Girl from Junchow is a rare novel: a second book that is actually better than the first. I enjoyed the first book, The Russian Concubine, but considered Furnivall's next novel a bit of a train wreck, so I came to this one with mixed feelings... and, as it turns out, was pleasantly surprised.

This book continues the adventures of Lydia, a teenage Russian refugee brought up in 1920's China, as she returns to Russia in search of her imprisoned father, accompanied by her half-brother Alexei and friend Liev Popkov. Her Chinese lover Chang An Lo puts in an appearance as well, and he's actually much improved since The Russian Concubine; he has a life now and struck me as a much more believable character than he did the first time around. We're also introduced to a new cast of secondary characters: a pleasure, since one of the things Furnivall does very well is develop the secondary cast.

The story, meanwhile, is an entertaining one, complete with crisp dialogue and a well-drawn historical setting. And Furnivall's writing style has clearly matured since The Russian Concubine as well. The biggest sticking point for me is that the plot lacks realism, with characters frequently getting out of ridiculously dangerous and difficult situations with mind-boggling ease. Nothing nature, injuries or the Soviet State throws at these characters manages to stop them for long, which dilutes the suspense and makes relating to the characters' predicaments more difficult. These quick-and-easy solutions to seemingly insurmountable problems are nothing you wouldn't see in many a fantasy novel or action-packed thriller, but they seem out of place here, when combined with much loving attention to character development and setting, not to mention the relatively slow pacing, with whole chapters devoted to character interaction.

For those who haven't read The Russian Concubine, this book should still be easy to understand; the setting has shifted from China to Russia anyway, and many old characters have fallen by the wayside. And for those who read and enjoyed the first book, I highly recommend this sequel.

A wonderful sequel

After finishing 'The Russian Concubine' two years ago I hoped and hoped that a sequel would be released. I was so excited when I heard that 'The Girl from Junchow' had been released and snatched it up immediately.
I was not disappointed. We return to the world of Lydia Ivanova and find her journeying to Russia to find her father- just as she said she would at the end of 'The Russian Concubine'. I was relieved to find that we are also kept aware of the activities of Chang An Lo, for I had found him to be an intriguing character.
The plot of this novel has been expertly woven into the context of Stalinst Russia- the way Furnivall portrays the time period is magnificent (which isn't surprising, seeing as the author dealt with aspects of Stalnist Russia in her brilliant novel 'The Red Scarf').
The story is gripping, and has not lost the thrill that was present in the first novel. Lydia's character has been developed even further, and now, after two novels, I am becoming strangely attached to this courageous protagonist.
All in all, a wonderful book.

Better than the first, but...

I liked this book as well as the first but was quite thrown off by the convenient "Get Out Of Jail Free" card-type of escape from dangerous situations that came up time and time again. Also, the revelation that Lydia made to Chang An Lo at the end of the book regarding the deal she'd made came far too late with no foreshadowing whatsoever. It felt contrived as did a few other things in this book.

That said, it is an enjoyable read. The characters are fleshed out nicely. I enjoyed it enough to stay awake into the wee hours reading it.

Not a good book for first-time learners

This book was used for my intro hematology class. As a reference it is very detailed, however it is not a good book to learn hematology for the first time. It is highly granular and doesn't focus on concepts. Because of this, our lectures and tests were very based on rote memorization without the bigger picture of the biological concepts. The former is what students forget immediately, the latter is what students remember for much longer.

About the Author

Paul B. Thompson has been a leading scholar in food ethics for over thirty years. He was present at the founding of three professional societies for food ethics and has served in an advisory capacity for the U.S. National Research Council, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, Genome Canada, and Wageningen University and Research Institute in the Netherlands , among others. He edited the Encyclopedia of Food and Agricultural Ethics (Springer) and writes a blog for Thornapple Community Supported Agriculture in Lansing MI.

A healthy challenge to ideas about conscientious consumption.

I'm heavily involved with our small town food co-op, and though I'm a retired city person living out my lifelong rural fantasy now, making friends with farmers, eating fresh farm food, happily free from commuting and shopping in supermarkets, I am very tuned in to all the arguments about eating local foods as a way to be kind to humans, animals, and the environment. This book educates me about the impossibility of untangling the interwoven factors that a person would want to understand in order to make ethical decisions. I like uncertainties that make strong opinions impossible, so even though I can't know if my food choices are ethically justified, I and hoards of others enjoy the fantasy of thinking we can save the world through better shopping,

I probably wouldn't pick a book about ethics off the shelf, but when it's about food my attention is alive, especially when it makes me into a skeptic about my own good intentions.

This is the best book available for people who are concerned with the ethics of food production and diet. Paul Thompson is a philosopher, an ethicist. But he is also steeped in the science of agriculture, the history and culture of agriculture, and the issues of the day, as he is a professor in one of the premier colleges of agriculture and natural resources in the world: Michigan State University. He will not let the reader off wth simple answers, though. His analyses of agri-ethics require one to consider first-order, second-order, and third-order consequences of of choices. Don't expect that all your presumptions and preferences will be easy to justify as you read. The book is well written, with a scholar's command of the subject. I have taught about agriculture and food as social scientist for 38 years. This book will affect the way I teach it from now on.
