About the Author
Theoni Pappas is passionate about mathematics. A native Californian, Pappas received her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1966 and her M.A. from Stanford University in 1967. She taught high school and college mathematics for nearly two decades, then turned to writing a remarkable series of innovative books which reflect her commitment to demystifying mathematics and making the subject more approachable. Through her pithy, nonthreatening and easily comprehensible style, she breaks down mathematical prejudices and barriers to help one realize that mathematics is a dynamic world of fascinating ideas that can be easily accessible to the layperson.

Her math calendars and over 18 math books appeal to both young and adult audiences alike. Three of her books have been Book-of-the Month Club selections, and her Joy of Mathematics was selected as a Pick of the Paperbacks. Her books have been translated into Japanese, Finnish, French, Slovakian, Czech, Korean, Turkish, Russian, Thai, simplified and traditional Chinese, Portuguese, Italian, Vietnamese, and Spanish.

In 2000 Pappas received the Excellence in Achievement Award from the University of California Alumni Association for her work on books and other innovative products that deal with mathematics. She lives in Palo Alto, CA.

Excellent math-geek calendar!

I love this calendar! It is posted outside my office door (I am a physics professor at a university) and I get lots of positive comments about how fun it is to work out some the interesting answers. I look forward to the new calendar coming out every year!

Year after year the errors continue!!!

Read on to see the 2016 errors:
2015 Review: NOPE! NOPE! NOPE! Again, the author has neglected to appropriately proof her work (or the work of others who provide her with the mathematics problems). Take the problem in September 2015. The "Novel" question references a total of 2,443 pages, but the answer references a total of 2,553 pages. This is unforgivable in a mathematics. And what's more, this happens year after year after year.

And now the 2016 calendar is out. And the author didn't wait long to make her first error. January 4th: What is the product of the two solutions to these two equations? [ - .5X - 7Y = 13 ] and [ 6X + .5Y = -13 ]. The product of the solutions to these two equations is certainly NOT 4. But if you change the sign of the first variable in the first equation (resulting in [ .5X - 7Y = 13 ] and [ 6X + .5Y = -13 ]), then the two solutions are -2 and -2, and their product is 4, which is also the date of the problem. I pray that someone out there reading this review can contact the author and encourage her to hire an editor who can perform basic mathematical calculations in her future calendars.

Product Review for Motivation: Biological, Psychological, and Environmental (4th Edition)

This is a textbook for a Motivational Psychology course I am enrolled in. The textbook is decent and has been recently updated. I have noticed a few spelling and grammar errors that were likely due to spell check being utilized instead of a human editor. Some of the studies are a bit dated, and due to that, new research is emerging now that contradicts some of the material in the textbook, but this is fairly normal due to the nature of the discipline. In some of the chapters, the author can be long winded, especially in instances where he breaks down a topic and presents several studies that suggest the same information. Overall though, it is a well-written and easy to understand book with lots of empirical research to back up topics. The subject is rather interesting as well, which helps to keep the reader engaged. I would suggest this text to educators or students who need resources or background information.

Very helpful, informative book

I finished my psychology degree last year and this is the only book that I truly remember and wish that I still had to refer to. The information contained is very relevant to phenomenon experienced in life and helped me understand a lot of interesting aspects of human behavior. I rented the book but wished I had purchased it. I will probably buy it in the near future.

There are three criteria for inclusion in this near-comprehensive reference work on a relatively narrow aspect of folklore: the creature cannot be divine, it must be a supernatural being from mythology, legend, folklore, or classic literature, and it may be a cryptozoological or symbolic being, such as a heraldic beast. Although various other sources treat giants, monsters, and mystery animals, none seems to cover them all at once, and this work's inclusion of the symbolic element appears to be unique. Entries give basic descriptions of each creature as well as its activities, region, culture, and historical period, and each entry is both cross-referenced and referenced to a selected bibliography. Appendixes categorize beings under country or region as well as such headings as "Beings Associated with Catastrophe." While works as modern as J.R.R. Tolkien's are cited, the Harry Potter series is not, though several monsters described here are present in J.K. Rowling's books. Perhaps Rose (Spirits, Fairies, Gnomes, and Goblins) does not consider Potter classic literature, but for a current reference work, this may soon prove a serious oversight. If you're looking for a children's book with colorful illustrations and a sentimental tone then you won't be as pleased as I was

This book was above all else an incredibly comprehensive mythical bestiary. No other single volume I've seen to date can compare to the sheer breadth of creatures referenced in these pages. It gives a truly global perspective to the term monster. In my case, this book was everything I had hoped it would be -- a thorough encyclopedia on the subject. If you're looking for a children's book with colorful illustrations and a sentimental tone then you won't be as pleased as I was with this purchase. This book serves to introduce the reader to the various imaginary creatures of the world, many of which will surely be new to the average enthusiast, and hopefully inspire them to further investigate those they find particularly intriguing.

A condensed compendium for serious knowledge seekers of mythological creatures

Encyclopaedias have always enjoyed favour as a means of presenting subject matter in a condensed and accessible form. There are a number of books that treat giants, monsters and mystery animals none however seems to cover the entire lot in one book including symbolic elements. In alphabetical order giving basic descriptions of each creature as well as its activities, region, culture and historical period. In addition to the basic description and explanation of the origins the author explains parallels to other cultural icons, common heritages and manifestations pertaining to modern popular culture. My only disappointment in this book would be the pictures although there were a number of sketches they were all black and white a bit of colour would have improved the visual effect of this encyclopaedia greatly. We have after all grown accustomed to artistically drawn and designed books.
Mythical creatures have always generated popularity of immense proportion in literary works, film, t/v and the most basic beginning story telling. They are legendary creatures believed at one point in our past history to be real beings. Mythical creatures can easily be divided into two groups ones that actually existed ones that are a composition of imagination gone wild in a time where imagination played a large part of existence. Over time these stories become legends they are then transferred into modern day mythological beings or creatures through film and majestic art work. Each country has their own mythical and magical creatures, monsters and legendary heroes brought to life in a continuum. We are constantly searching and wanting to know more about these myths, they are forever haunting our imagination and will forever continue to run along the imaginary mind. Movies, books on superheroes are forever bringing these mythical beings back to life.

A very concise source of information.

I was surprised with the extensive amount of listings within the book. There is a lot of otherwise hard to find information. I would have given this book 5 stars if it weren't for one thing; there is no index. A book like this should really contain an index for those looking for particular traits, or words within a creature's definition. However there are listings in the back based on different characteristics it is not as exhaustive or all around helpful as a simple index would be. Adult/High School—This book brings grandmother's crochet to the high-fashion world with more than 20 patterns for everything from leg and neck warmers to dresses. The authors deserve credit for the sheer creativity of the designs, even if they're not always practical (one choker necklace pattern incorporates feathers into the stitching, and others weave ribbons and buttons into patterns). Some of the ideas border on the ridiculous—the "hip hanger" looks like a sideways knitted apron worn over pants, and the patterns for fringed halters and bikinis are a little over-the-top even for those with the body confidence to pull off such a look. Projects are packaged and modeled by young "downtown" type women, giving this book a feel that is very different from the majority of craft books for young people these days—think club wear and hip-hop-inspired designs rather than the indie-hipster looks in books such as Amy Spencer's Crafter Culture Handbook (Marion Boyars, 2006). As such, it will appeal to different readers and crafters, and the wide range of projects guarantees that anyone will find at least a couple of patterns worth trying out. About the Author

Erika Simmons and Monika Simmons are partners in Double Stitch, a retail line of clothing and accessories. They were awarded the Style Makers and Rule Breakers award by Fashion Group International, and their work has been featured in Chicago Magazine, The New York Times, and Women's Wear Daily. Their collection was also selected by Macy's on State Street in Chicago for inclusion in the new Chicago Indie Designer Shop. They both live in Chicago.

Fun and refreshing twists for the classics

What I've enjoyed about this book is that it gave me a fresh, new appreciation for worsted weight yarn. For example, I love Red Heart Super Saver yarns because of their vibrant color palettes and availability, but they're not exactly pratical and tend make stiffer garments. This book has allowed me to use an array of yarns, including Red Heart, giving me wonderful results. The patterns are fairly easy to follow and this book takes care of that quick project "itich" when one wants somthing cute in a hurry. While some things in this book probably wouldn't work for me because i'm over 40, but having crocheted for over 30 years, I find this book refreshing. The only thing that I would suggest is that you read through the patterns. Although they're fairly straight forward and simple, like with any knitted or crocheted project, it's a good idea to understand exactly what you're dealing with. Nevertheless, play with the patterns and have fun!

Great way to spice up your wardrobe!

The double stitch twins have done it again, the book is great especially if you are looking for a way to add to your wardbrobe with new and fresh fashion. I've been crotcheting since I was a grade schooler, but stopped several years ago. I just recently picked it back up and I am now well past my refresher/beginner stage and looking for new and more challenging patterns to crotchet. I am not an arts and crafts person, I like making things that I can wear or give away for someone else to wear and appreciate, this book came right in handy. I have already spotted my next project and if I can finish it with success, I have Christmas gifts for a few people already scoped out! Thanks double stitch twins....I am looking forward to your next pattern book, hint..hint...

This book is like looking at a fashion magazine. The authors and designers, sisters, have produced some of the most modern and "doable" patterns I've seen in a long time. This is my favorite crochet book purchase in the past 10 years.
I appreciate the designers giving us their ideas and patterns. Their ideas encouraged me to create an extra edging of a piece I am working on currently. I am just dying to start one, two, or three of the patterns in this book. I also appreciate the convenience and ease of some the patterns. They use readily available yarns, many of which are inexpensive namebrands that you can find at your local craft store and there are patterns for Intermediate Beginners and up.
Love it!!! (Can you tell ;-)
