Liked it a lot

I liked this book and can't wait for the next one. It is not a ordinary romance, in this first book at least the heroine doesn't really have a real love. I had a little bit of trouble liking the heroine because she seemed to always choose the most difficult way. But she is strong and also very young. There also isen't any "hero" in this part, at least I don't think so. Despite that I feel drawn to the characters and have to know what happens next... This book ends with a real cliffhanger.

Rich in history, intrigue, with a strong female. The Siri speaks through its characters and is wonderful to read I think I've read it over five times now.

Yet while institutionally marginalized in most respects, evangelicals and Calvinists formed the elite corps of artists, artisans, and architects responsible for theorizing, designing, and building the royal and ecclesiastical structures of the dominant Catholic majority.

In Building Codes, Catharine Randall contends that all Calvinist architecture recalls a scriptural intertext, and seeks to build upon the firm foundations of the Gospel. These architects, instructed to erect monuments glorifying Catholic patrons, inscribe the tension between their confessional perspective and their commission upon their structures. Randall explores the ways in which structures such as Chambord, Chenonceau, the Luxembourg Palace, and the Louvre bear encoded criticisms of religious and political authority.

By examining the lives of several famous architects of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, along with blueprints, engravings, actual structures, garden layouts, builders' manuals, and illustrated allegories, this study excavates the Calvinist faith of these architects and demonstrates the dramatic effects their embattled religious perspective had on the structures they built.

Pursuing these legacies through the fragmentary play of desire, dream, slander, and counsel, Pandian calls attention not only to the moral potential of ordinary existence, but also to the inescapable force of accident, chance, and failure in the making of ethical lives. Blockbusted!

As an avid movie fan and long time customer of Blockbuster I switched to Netflix a few years ago as I loved the no late fees concept. The library from Netflix of course was huge so that was a plus as well. This book helps to explain the disruption in the market for movie fans and how slow Blockbuster was to respond. Reminds me a lot about the ongoing battle with Amazon and Barnes and Noble (Barnes and Noble responded a little better).

Gina Keating does a good job balancing the two sides and taking the reader into both houses to understand the thought process for Blockbuster and Netflix. I enjoyed reading about Johnny Antioco from Blockbuster as he so badly wanted to implement certain ideas, but at times was misguided.

Anyone who is a fan of corporate strategy will enjoy this read as Netflix enjoyed having large amounts of cash and low overhead compared to Blockbuster with a serious cash burn and high overhead. In addition Blockbuster had franchisees not on the same page with overall strategy. Netflix also had a personal credo of "great brands had to connect with customers on a personal level". If used wisely and monitored this is where social media helps certain companies.

Good book on how to get after the more established companies and disrupt "business as usual". Anyone starting a business and challenging mature companies and markets needs to read and understand this book. Well written and an interesting read for sure.

Mandatory read for any tech entrepreneur

Three well-researched books in one: history and evolution of movie rental business, the rise of Netflix and downfall of Blockbuster, battles with Carl Icahn, and more. Gina Keating manages to give the reader a first-person account of all the critical turning points as if you were in the boardroom of each of these companies - it's a real page-turner, both for the storytelling as well as the business, operational, and technology insights hidden in these pages.

It's rare to find a book that can provide a complete head-to-head and blow-by-blow overview of an entire industry -- "Netflixed" is exactly that for the media rental industry. A mandatory read for any tech entrepreneur!

Netflix & Blockbuster oral histories assembled into a wonderful, rollicking narrative by Gina Keating

Gina Keating's 'Netflixed' is more than just a tale about the rise of Netflix. It's a fascinating - dare say 'gripping' - narrative of the no-holds-barred, street alley fight between Netflix and Blockbuster for America's eyeballs.

We all collectively joke today about Blockbuster's dead meat adherence to its bricks and mortars roots while the country hurtled inexorably towards a broadband future. Keating reminds us that it almost didn't turn out that way. There was a period in time in which Blockbuster - under the stewardship of CEO John Antioco & SVP/GM Shane Evangelist (has there ever been a better name for a corporate leader?) - conceived and masterfully executed Blockbuster Online, an online/offline play which terrified Netflix executives to their bones. Keating's book is as much Antioco & Evangelist's story as it is Reed Hasting's.

For the record, it was Carl Icahn and Jim Keyes that ultimately destroyed the promise of Blockbuster Online, not Netflix. Keating makes a very compelling case on that account. Consider it death by one's own hand.

On the Netflix side, it's less Hasting's tale than it is Mark Randolph's, the founder and spiritual touchstone of Netflix. Keating's stories from early days of Netflix have the feel of a joyous, swashbuckling band of pirates. The author does tip her hat to Hastings though -- the man's combination of entrepreneurial chops, serious smarts, ability to be the secret whisperer to the financial markets and sheer will of personality are a fearsome combination in one man. This is no accidental success story.

In her Acknowledgements, Keating relates that "[t]hese executives humbled me with candid self-assessment, the likes of which I had rarely heard as a longtime journalist covering the financial, political, and legal realms. Simply being allowed to share their thoughts and emotional journey at such close range made this project highly satisfying." Her talent is that she took these oral histories and assembled them into this wonderful, rollicking narrative. I highly recommend you check it out.

About the Author

South Africa After the Aparthied

It's an interesting book if one wants to examine the lives of Black South Africans living in a big city after the apartheid. Most of the the people in these neighborhoods have moved from countryside and live in a separate world from White South Africans. The unique thing about this book is that it doesn't deal with White vs Black issues, but its main focus is the attitude and prejudices of Black South Africans toward other Black South Africans and immigrants from other African countries. Interestingly, the rural people feel like Blacks in a city like Johannesburg are dirty, with low morals, and no good can come from associating with them. Their views on Immigrant African are even worse. The epidemic of AIDS is understood in the light of these views--it is believed that it was brought by Black African immigrants from countries like Nigeria.

One Word: Amazing

I was assigned this book for a class on globalization, and I was not very excited to read it. However I was pleasantly surprised to find myself not just able to get through it, but actually enjoying it.
Phaswane Mpe is a phenomenal writer, who developed deep, complex characters and truly embodied the state of mind that is xenophobia. The story he created will capture you and your
curiosity of the unknown; and if you do know a lot about Africa and xenophobia, it will still pull you in with its relatability and a fantastic storyline.
This book is thought provoking, engaging, sad, and at times, amusing.

About the Author
Ulrich Adelt is an assistant professor of American Studies and African American and Diaspora Studies at the University of Wyoming. He has published articles in a number of journals, including American Quarterly and the Journal of Popular Music Studies.

Studied scholarly examination of what the Blues are and are not. Thought provoking analysis. Interesting anecdotes. The case studies are well done and a fast read once one gets past the rather ponderous introduction. Recommended read for Blues enthusiasts.

About the Author

Chef Solla Eiríksdóttir is the owner of Gló in Reykjavik – Iceland’s most popular vegetarian and raw-food restaurant. She opened Gló twenty years ago and today runs five successful restaurants, an organic market, and has her own organic food brand, which is sold in grocery stores and supermarkets across Iceland. She has published five cookbooks, co-authored others, and has written many articles on organic food. She taught vegetarian cooking on television and she gives demonstrations every year at The Longevity conference in Los Angeles. She is an enthusiastic advocate of an organic and sustainable lifestyle, and has helped to make both vegetarianism and the raw food movement more mainstream and widely available in Iceland. Her restaurant and cuisine has gained an international reputation seeing Solla win the best RAW Gourmet Chef award in 2011 and 2012.

Health food with a vegan/raw bias and some very interesting creative from Iceland ... complete with gorgeous landscape photos

Disclaimer: my tastes run in a more locavore, less powdered supplement ... more towards a millet congee than a green smoothie for breakfast. So my first reaction glancing through the cookbook was not positive. But I've been exploring Icelandic/Nordic cuisine recipes and soon discovered that the cookbook has some interesting recipes - some real gems hidden among the food-sectarian vegan/raw/health food recipes.

The first recipes to catch my attention were some basic fermentation recipes - Icelandic Kimchi: cabbage, bell pepper, radish, carrot, cauliflower in cider vinegar, tamari, coconut palm sugar, ginger, garlic, chili - and interesting variant. Two family recipes - fermented carrots with spices and fermented beets both show an originality in spicing that encourage further exploration.

Spiralized vegetables with kale pesto is a typical modern take (minus the nutriutional yeast) which becomes interesting because of the base vegetables - rutabaga, carrot, beet and zucchini. Using turnip slices as "tortillas" for avocado and nut tacos results in a flavorful and beautiful plate. Beets are featured broadly: Beet and Sweet Potato Soup; Beautiful Raw Root Salad; Baked Beet Bowl ... Cabbage appears frequently and stars in Thai Slaw with almond butter and kaffir lime juice in the dressing.

In short this is an inventive cook who knows how to maximize the usefulness of plants ... down to composting directions for those last bits and piece.
