The 10 Laws of Trust: Building the Bonds That Make a Business Great, by Joel Peterson

Trust is the glue that holds an organization together. It turns deflection into transparency, suspicion into empowerment, and conflict into creativity. With it, a tiny company like John Deere grew into a worldwide leader. Without it, a giant corporation like Enron toppled.

In The 10 Laws of Trust, JetBlue chairman Joel Peterson explores how a culture of trust gives companies an edge. Consider this: What does it feel like to work for a firm where leaders and colleagues trust one another? Freed from micromanagement and rivalry, every employee contributes his or her best. Risk taking and innovation become the norm. And, as Peterson notes, "When a company has a reputation for fair dealing, its costs drop: Trust cuts the time spent second-guessing and lawyering."

In clear, engaging prose, highlighted by compelling examples, Peterson details how to establish and maintain a culture of trust. Steps include:

Start with integrity - Invest in respect - Empower everyone - Require accountability - Create a winning vision - Keep everyone informed - Budget in line with expectations - Embrace conflict - Forget "you" to become an effective leader - And more

With this book in hand, you'll be able to plant the seeds of trust--and reap the rewards of reputation, profits, and success.

From the Inside Flap

“Trust works to create abundance and is far superior to hoarding power, harboring suspicions, or barricading oneself behind gotcha controls. . . . Mistrustful organizations are preoccupied with keeping people from doing their worst, while high-trust organizations are focused on empowering people to do their best.”

In this smartly organized, evidence-based book, Joel Peterson decries the mediocrity created by self-centered leadership, profit-above-people mentalities, and cloak-and-dagger cultures. The JetBlue chairman and Stanford professor reawakens our instincts for using trust to catalyze people and companies to their highest potential—working together toward goals, innovating, and sharing knowledge.

The 10 Laws of Trust offers specific trust-building ideas and examples of how integrity, respect, humility, vision, and more have helped elevate nimble startups, storied corporations, and even sinking giants grasping for a lifeline. From Google’s cafeteria design that fosters interaction to Netflix’s empowering family-leave policies, from Salesforce’s clear accountability mechanism to Zappos’ radical openness with sales data, trusting attitudes and behaviors move the dial forward, instead of holding companies back. In high-trust organizations, long-term growth springs from this healthy, durable core.

With trust as a guiding principle, the 10 Laws distills the essence of great leadership into simple truths that elude so many leaders—but have the power to bind people together into a business worth building.

Joel Peterson is the chairman of JetBlue and a consulting professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Formerly the managing partner of Trammell Crow, one of the nation’s leading real estate developers, he is chairman of the investment firm he founded in 1995, Peterson Partners.

David A. Kaplan worked for 25 years at Newsweek and Fortune. A New York Times bestselling author, he is now a media consultant and teaches journalism and law at NYU.

From the Back Cover

Where a great book makes complex ideas seem simple, 10 Laws captures the essence of trust and provides a clear pathway for those willing to nurture it. Simultaneously educational and uplifting—it’s a book to be savored.” — General (Retired) Stanley McChrystal, author of the New York Times bestseller Team of Teams

“Joel Peterson’s simple, lucid book is a blueprint for building a culture of trust, creativity and high morale at a time when all three are desperately needed.”— Arianna HuffinGton, co-founder of the Huffington Post Media Group

“The 10 Laws of Trust reminded me how vital and intuitive building trust is to our success as leaders. All present and future leaders need to place this book on their must-read list, as it clearly delineates the most important behaviors we need to not only ‘speak to,’ but ‘act to’ in order to insure both our own success and that of our organizations.”— Ann Rhoades, former Head of People at Southwest Airlines, author of Built on Values, and founder of People Ink

A guide to building a thriving organization through psychological safety
By Joe
This is a very special volume. If you have been reading lately about notions of "psychological safety" at leading businesses like Google, then 10 Laws of Trust is what you need to enact these ideas in your own life and for your own enterprise. This book distills a lifetime of management and family experience into practicable wisdom about what it takes to create a high-performance organization that runs on passion rather than fear.

It's also something of a shortcut to getting something that I missed out on––taking Joel's class at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Early in the book (pg. 14), Joel presents a chart showing levels of trust in various types of organizations. A family runs on love; a prison runs on fear. Where between these posts, he asks impliedly, does your business fall?

This book has a tendency to ask the kinds of penetrating questions that cause the reader to honestly reconcile himself with his situation. It then provides many examples of actionable advice that can help us grapple toward a higher place, both for ourselves and those who work with and for us.

I can't think of anything more indispensable in the much-ballyhooed Millennial age than The 10 Laws of Trust.

Basic Wisdom for Better Relationships
By John Chancellor
Trust is foundational for all healthy relationships. In order to achieve our goals in life, we need the help and cooperation of others. Trust is an essential ingredient for building and maintaining relationships. Trust is also a two-way street – we must trust others and earn their trust. Trust takes time to build but can be lost or destroyed in seconds. If you are seeking ways to improve your chances of success in life, start with trust.
Joel Peterson, author of The 10 Laws of Trust, has provided a framework for developing and fostering trust in our work and personal lives.

The ten laws are very straightforward and easy to understand. We often have trouble when we fail to follow some of the laws. When trust breaks down, communication and cooperation breakdown. It becomes much more difficult to achieve our goals.

Mr. Peterson starts the discussion by defining the fundamentals. According to Mr. Peterson, there are three conditions for trust – Character, Competence and Authority. He further states that there are three types of trust – reciprocal, representative and pseudo-trust. As trust declines, people grab for power – when we encounter the absence of trust, we circle the wagons, trying to consolidate power. This further erodes trust.

Then he presents the ten laws – starting with personal integrity, showing respect for and empowering others to embracing respectful conflict, showing humility and allowing for win-win negotiations. Most of these “laws” are self-evident – things we all know but need to be reminded of.
The book is a short, quick read. But the concepts are very powerful and should be a permanent part of our lives.

This is the real thing. A great book on trust by a proven trustworthy guy!
By Daniel B. Beaulieu
A great guiding light of the straight and narrow.
Doing the right thing is not always easy in business but it is up to our leaders to project the example for the rest of their company to follow. Someone once told me that a leader of any company has to be extremely careful about what he or she says because first of all it will ten times louder than if anyone else in the company said it and secondly it will be repeated by everyone in the company…so leaders must be aware of this and tread lightly all the while leading the company to be the best it can be.
The author Joel Peterson is the Chairman of Jet Blue Airlines which is my favorite airlines and thus the reason for why I wanted to read this book.
So for a minute here I am going to talk about Jet Blue and the people I have meet on Jet Blue since I fly the least forty times a year. And good news I have to say that what Chairman Peterson is selling in this book…Trust… is evident in the day to day operations of this company. When a number of my associates and I were bashing the airlines the other day…a common practice among business people. I spoke up and defended Jet Blue by saying that no matter what happens and we all know that yes stuff happens that people at Jet Blue always give me the feeling that they give a damn. The genuinely try to do their best and they act at all times like they have the customer in mind. Unlike some of the other airlines who could not care less about the customers and yes we know it. In end the end I was telling my colleagues that I trust the people of Jet Blue to do right by me. And that’s before I read this book.
The point I am trying to make is that this guy is walking the talk. His company is an actually representation of the message he is getting across in his book.
From his chapter on accepting responsibility and the blame if something goes wrong. How many airlines do that? To fixing what can be fixed and doing it quickly. To instilling trust in your people because if they feel they can trust their management they will become more trustworthy, it all rings true.
Okay so I’m gushing. Sorry about that I just like this guy. I like what he has to say and I like the company he leads. It’s as simple as that. If you want some good advice about establishing trust in your employees and your vendors and your customers (yes that’s me) then this is the book you want to read. This is the real McCoy.
