The Best Book Ever on Weightlifting and Training

If you are familiar with Wendler's other book 531, and like it, then this is an absolute requirement to purchase. I have read through my copy of Beyond 531 about 4 times now, taking notes, and it contains tons of new info and new variations to training. It's almost like Wendler just said screw it and poured all his training knowledge into this one book. Essentially what you get are unlimited new spin-offs to the original 531 program. For example if you want to use more volume, there is a plan. More singles, there is a plan. Higher frequency, there is a plan. Peaking for a meet or increasing strength, there is a plan. He even includes a program in the works called Beyond 531, which is very interesting. Particularly I found the most useful bits to be what he refers to as the Last Set First, Joker Sets, and Spinal Tap Training to be the best parts of the new book. He also lays out a 28 week training block where you manipulate the classic Boring But Big plan from 10 rep sets all the way down to singles.

So if you haven't purchased 531 yet, I would say start there. This book is a completely new addition to his methods and doesn't really explain the original 531 book, since his first book did. Rather this book provides tons of new options and ways to modify one's own program to fit their needs/schedule/training goals. The best way I can explain it, is it's like if your favorite band released 100 songs all at once, instead of narrowing it down to a 12 song cd. He puts it all out there and lets you decide what is useful and what is not for your training. What's funny is that ever since about 2 years ago when I started following the 531 plan, people have asking me what I do in the gym or what complex lifting program I follow! I have even been accused by friends, of using steroids because of the mass/strength you can build with this plan. Little do they know about 80% of my work is just different rep/set variations of the squat, bench, deadlift and military press all thanks to Wendler! Highly recommended.

5,3,1 Bible but proceed with caution

I have been training with the 5 3 1 program for about 3 years. I'm pretty familiar with it and was excited to see what else Wendler had cooked up. Basically he has given us a wealth of info, variations and programs. Really it starts to be overwhelming. That isn't a bad thing. This book contains all the programs that you will probably ever need in your lifetime. Two things that stand out to me for those people who may have read his earlier book are the Joker sets and the elimination of the four week D load cycle. The Joker sets are great way to Go hard when you're having a good day.
As good as this new book is and as glad as I am that Wendler decided to write it I can't help but worry that some people won't use it appropriately. This book is about a formulaic approach to trying to get the most out of your body that's good but you cannot forget the basics. If you're a beginner don't read this book-- it will not help you. You'll get all excited about all the different program variations and you're going to lose track of what is really important. Instead, buy the original 531 book, get strong, learn your body, and then when you've developed read this book.

Good Material but Extremely Disorganised

This book is loaded with templates -- 70% of the book consists of variational templates, unfortunately Jim does a very bad job at organizing this wealth of information.

I find myself constantly re-reading sections and looking at the contents page as I never know when I've stumbled upon a different section of a book (they are mostly just separated by paragraphs without making it known when moving on to a new topic).

This book works on the foundation of the popular 5/3/1 and adds a LOT of variation to everything, with that being said I'd only recommend this book to an advanced trainee who has read the previous 5/3/1 book.

In summary, this book definitely needs a v2.0 just for the sake of organization. It is a massive pain to have to sift through and re-read again just to ensure the information you just read does not pertain to a new topic.
